As lockdown comes to an end, many find themselves dreaming of warm sand, rugged coastlines, or lush vegetation. Cinque Terre invites you to discover five charming villages in Liguria, a region in western Italie. Coves, cliffs, churches and fortified walls, a bay sheltering a breathtaking beach… True to its calling, Cinque Terre offers countless opportunities for hiking and swimming. But when should you head to Cinque Terre? Here's what you need to know about the climate and attractions of each village depending on the season.

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre presents itself as a collection of five picturesque villages lined along the Riviera del Levante: Monterosso, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, and Vernazzo. Known for its vineyards, colorful houses, and pedestrian alleys dotted with medieval buildings, they rank among the most beautiful gems of Liguria. Two prestigious titles support this claim: the site's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List and its designation as the Cinque Terre National Park. Authorities are considering opening the park gates starting June 3.

The Climate in Cinque Terre

To travel to Cinque Terre and explore the wonders of the Ligurian coast, it's wise to consider the weather. Mediterranean influence is evident, resulting in pronounced summer dryness and mild winters, accompanied by brief rain showers. Temperature fluctuations can sometimes reach 40°C in August, turning villages into ovens. From December to February, the thermometer averages around 10°C. However, enormous variations are expected here too, as this figure can easily swing from 5°C to 20°C between successive weeks.

So, the ideal season to discover Cinque Terre varies depending on your interests. If you're seeking water activities, you'll need to visit between May and September. The sea warms up at the beginning of June, but swimmers start arriving in large numbers from mid-May onward. August is characterized by peak heat, but at the same time, it receives the most visitors. Between August 15 and 22, all accommodations triple their rates compared to the average. Locals call this week "Ferragosto." On the other hand, if you're planning an adventure-focused trip—hiking, trekking, or exploring natural parks—avoid summer's unbearable temperatures and visit Cinque Terre in spring, between mid-March and May.

Given the mild climate, winter is far from a dead season for tourism. It's the perfect time for long walks through the villages while renting guest rooms at bargain prices.

With more frequent rain, November is arguably the worst month to visit Cinque Terre in Italie.

Monterosso, a Hub for Water Sports

Traveling to Italy to Discover Cinque Terre

Monterosso is the gateway to Cinque Terre National Park when approaching from Levanto. Its large beach is frequented by sunbathing enthusiasts, seafood skewer lovers, and sailing fans. The kayaking circuit along the shoreline also thrills summer visitors. If you come outside the summer season, swimming isn't recommended; nevertheless, the magnificent statue of Neptune, the Greek god of the Sea, is well worth a beach stroll. Erected in 1910, this 14-meter-tall sculpture is a powerful symbol of Monterosso.

While exploring the historic center, hikers can visit churches with bell towers from the 12th and 13th centuries: the Chapel of San Francesco, the Capuchin Convent, near the Fegina quarter, or the Church of Saint John the Baptist, which captivates with its characteristic two-tone marble and green facade.

Vernazzo, a Lovely Vantage Point

After the violent floods that struck in 2011, COVID-19 was the biggest shock for Vernazzo. To bounce back, the village is banking on tourism: the fishing port bustles in summer, a pebbly beach invites relaxation, and the colorful houses clustered along the seaside embody the perfect image of the Mediterranean.

June is the ideal month to enjoy a beach getaway in Vernazzo. A stroll along the seafront promenade lets you explore an old church and fishing boats that busily ply the harbor. Along Via Roma, the village's liveliest thoroughfare, you'll find cafés and terraces perfect for enjoying a drink.

Perched at 60 meters elevation, Doria Castle is a popular attraction. It preserves memories of the feudal nobility that once ruled the village. Overlooking the cliffs and sea, a tour of the castle is considered the most beautiful vantage point in Cinque Terre.

Corniglia, the Most Secluded

Built on high ground, Corniglia is the only village of Cinque Terre without direct access to the sea. There's a secret beach nestled in a cove surrounded by cliffs that swimmers can enjoy in July and August. It takes barely 30 minutes to explore this charming village. Autumn is ideal for wandering through vineyards and colorfully painted farmhouses. You'll appreciate the walk along Via Fieschi.

From the Santa Maria terrace, hikers get a gorgeous view of Manarola and Vernazzo.

The village is accessible via a 300-step staircase or by ferry. Many trails are impassable in winter due to rain.

Riomaggiore, the Village of Beautiful Churches

Close to La Spezia, Riomaggiore is an endearing and picturesque village. As you approach the jetty, your eye is struck by the extraordinary cluster of colorful houses gazing toward the sea.

If you arrive in March, April, or September, the water is still too cold for swimming. Take a stroll through the old town and keep an eye out for historic monuments.

Completed in the second half of the 13th century, Riomaggiore Castle bears witness to the feudal wars that tore the village apart. Don't miss the Church of Saint John the Baptist and the Oratorio di Santa Maria Assunta, where stained glass artistry flourishes fully.

Manarola, the Most Charming

Norman ruins, stone bridge, rocky needles jutting from the sea floor… Manarola is sometimes described as the most beautiful and poetic of Cinque Terre's villages.  It's hard not to be captivated by its vernacular architecture.

Families won't be disappointed to stay in Manarola during the year-end holidays. The town is famous for hosting the world's largest nativity scene. Children will be amazed. La Spezia radiates with countless lights to bring the magic of Christmas to residents. Although it doesn't snow, the coldest temperatures occur in December and January. Expect heavy rainfall.
